Bruce Fouke is a professor of Geology and Integrative Biology, and an active member of the Carl. R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He also serves as Director of the Roy J. Carver Biotechnology Center on the Illinois campus. His lab group of students, postdocs and research scientists work at the intersection of carbonate geology and molecular biology (Geobiology, Astrobiology and Biomineralization) on projects that range from energy exploration and recovery, to translational human medicine, environmental influences on adaptation and evolution in hot springs, ancient Roman aqueduct hydrology, meteor impacts and NASA space exploration.

Brett Muehlhauser Bio: Brett Muehlhauser is a Research and Development Technical Fellow at NSI working to continue advancements in Digital Radiography (DR) and Computed Tomography (CT) technologies and applications. Brett has been with NSI for 20 years performing R&D, applications engineering, writing DR and CT training curriculum and teaching these courses to a global audience. Prior to coming to NSI, Brett worked in the aerospace industry for 15 years performing product development, failure analysis and product evaluations. He has been an ASNT and NAS 410 Level 3 for the last 35 years and been actively involved in the development of ASTM standards for Computed Tomography and Digital Radiography.

Why CT is instrumental in my field:
In my role as a science consultant, I often investigate physical objects or products that cannot be replaced, such as evidentiary items for a trial or a prototype exhibiting an intermittent failure. When dealing with these situations, CT scanning is by far the most powerful tool in my arsenal, providing information on the internal components of objects while perfectly preserving them. Even when the investigation needs to move to destructive testing, CT both provides unique insights on how to best direct that work and producing a digital record of the object for future analysis. This is particularly true in my sub-specialization of battery failure analysis, as CT provides a tool to assess whether a battery is intact, damaged or completely burnt, a distinction that has many implications on how to proceed with the investigation in a safe manner

Paul A. Iaizzo, PhD FHRS iaizz001@umn.edu is a Professor is the Departments of Surgery, Integrative Biology & Physiology and the Carlson School of Management, at the University of Minnesota. He also serves on the graduate faculties in Biomedical Engineering, Neuroscience, Integrative Biology & Physiology, Biological Science, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and Mechanical Engineering. He is the Director of the Malignant Hyperthermia Diagnostic Center and Medtronic Professor of Visible Heart® Research. Additionally, he is the Associate Director and Medtronic Chair of the Institute for Engineering in Medicine, also at the University of Minnesota. He earned both MS and PhD degrees (Focus: Physiology/Neurophysiology) from the University of Minnesota. His main research focus is translational systems physiology, where his research group does a broad range of studies. The Visible Heart® Laboratories are well known for their novel imaging techniques of functional cardiac anatomies and device testing within large mammalian hearts, including human: see the Atlas of Human Cardiac Anatomy http://www.vhlab.umn.edu/atlas/. Other research areas include: cardiac pacing and ablation, muscle pathophysiology and biophysical properties, thermoregulation, black bear hibernation, wound healing, 3D computational modeling and printing and educational uses of virtual reality. In 2002, he was acknowledged as a “Distinguished University Teaching Professor”. Since 1990, he has trained over 200 graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and medical students in his laboratories. Dr. Iaizzo, has authored more than 270 original articles, over 100 book chapters, edited 5 books, and is on numerous patents (both US and European) related to cardiac and thermoregulatory devices. In 2012, he was named to College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) for "outstanding contributions to research and education in translational systems physiology and cardiovascular engineering". In 2015 he was named a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society and in 2016 was made a Senior Fellow of IEEE.

Research Scientist Donald Danforth Plant Science Center

Keith Duncan is a research scientist in Dr. Chris Topp's lab at the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center in St. Louis, Missouri (USA), and is Director of their X-ray imaging facility. Before coming to the Danforth Center, Keith joined Dr. Rick Howard's lab in 1990 at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, Delaware (USA), using light, laser, electron, and X-ray imaging technologies to study all aspects of agricultural cell biology. When that facility was closed in 2016, Keith moved to St. Louis to join Chris Topp's lab at the Danforth Center and manage the newly opened X-ray imaging facility, one of the first in North America dedicated exclusively to studying plant biology. For the past five years Keith has been using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) to study plant biology both above and below the soil line using a large format high resolution XCT instrument, the NSI X5000. In particular, Keith's research in the Topp lab is focused on using X-ray tomography to study root system architecture, and grain and flower development in numerous economically important crops like corn, soybean, sorghum, and alfalfa.

Program Manager, Industrial Imaging VAREX

Daniel Shedlock, Ph.D.Daniel holds a BS and MS in nuclear engineering from Penn State and a Ph.D. in Nuclear Science from the University of Florida. After a career in nuclear reactor decommissioning he moved into NDT following the Columbia Shuttle accident. He helped implement x-ray backscatter imaging into the Shuttle Return-to-Flight program. At Varex, as part of an experienced imaging team, he developed experience with CR, DR, CT and high energy imaging. His current role at Varex Imaging is program manager of Varex’s Industrial Imaging Services, but continues to support R&D and application support for high-energy imaging and national laboratories

Global Responsible Level 3 North Star Imaging

Camaron Lemmer Bio: Camaron Lemmer, an ASNT and NAS-410 Level III is an Application and Training Specialist at North Star Imaging. He has worked as an Aerospace Responsible Level III with oversight of a film and DDA radiography production lab. He also had oversight of liquid penetrant inspection, visual inspection, tensile testing, and spectrometer testing. Camaron has worked with DDA technology for over 10 years for both DR and CT applications. He developed the necessary programs, and gained approval as the first NADCAP DDA lab in the world. Camaron has worked with a variety of Aerospace Prime end users on developing successful digital radiographic programs for meeting all ASTM and specific end user requirements.

Senior X-ray Technician North Star Imaging

Shaun has been working with our Inspection Services Group for the last 14 years where he has had an intricate part in performing scanning services on customer supplied parts, performing application studies for prospective customers wanting to purchase equipment, and is significantly involved with our Customer Back Innovation Team within NSI to drive innovations. Shaun’s specialty is outside the box thinking when approaching his scanning techniques with the different products and goals associated with those products to make the Customer successful in selling these products.

Senior Trainer, NAS-410 DR Level 2 North Star Imaging

Rick has been with NSI for about 5 years after working in field NDT at Team Industrial services. He currently teaches all of NSI's in- house classes covering all curriculum recommended by ASNT, NAS 410 and FWGIDR for levels 1 and 2 in DR and CT and Level 3 conversion to non-film and his kids say that he's an OK juggler. Rick also assists customers with advanced technique and application training. Additionally, he has been a presenter at both ASNT and BINDT events.

Seth Taylor is the General Manager of North Star Imaging. Seth has been working at North Star Imaging for over 2o years and has worked his way up through many roles within the company. Seth has a vast knowledge of the industry and nondestructive X-ray technology, and has helped create the innovative company North Star Imaging is today.
